In traditional classrooms, “sitting still” is often seen as a sign of discipline and learning. But research shows that for children under 6 years old, sitting still for long periods is not only difficult, it may even limit their natural growth and development.
At Sky International Preschool, we believe that movement is learning. Every step, every stretch, every playful jump is a way for children to explore the world, understand their bodies, and build confidence in their abilities.
Why sitting still doesn’t work for young children?
Neurological research highlights that children learn best when their bodies are active. Movement helps blood flow to the brain, improves focus, and strengthens memory. For children under 6, being asked to sit for long hours can actually reduce attention span, create frustration, and take away the joy of learning.
Instead of stillness, what children need is a rhythm of movement and rest, exploration and reflection.
Movement builds more than knowledge
When children are allowed to move freely, they are not only learning academic concepts, they are also:
- Strengthening their bodies: balance, coordination, and motor skills.
- Building self-regulation: learning when to move, when to pause, and how to listen to their bodies.
- Developing social skills: moving and playing together encourages cooperation, negotiation, and empathy.
- Growing confidence: every successful climb, jump, or dance move tells a child, “I can do this.”
According to Ms. Michelle - Educational Director of Sky: Movement Turns Every Classroom into a Space for Discovery
Ms. Michelle shared that the most effective way for children to learn is when physical activities are seamlessly integrated into their day.
At Sky International Preschool, children grow through movement and curiosity. They are always encouraged to move, explore, experiment, and learn with joy.
Our classrooms are designed to be open and flexible, where learning comes naturally through every activity: jumping, dancing, singing, role-playing, and exploring with excitement and wonder.
And learning doesn’t stop at the classroom. At Sky International Preschool, children expand their experiences through special function rooms - spaces that nurture both their bodies and their imagination:
- Gym: where children strengthen gross motor skills, build balance, and develop core strength.
- Light & Shadow Room: where curiosity is sparked as children explore reflections, perspectives, sizes, transparency, shapes, colors, and positioning.
- Music Room: where children express emotions, experience rhythm, sound, volume, vibration, and tempo through music and movement.
These spaces are more than “classrooms” – they are invitations for children to step into a world of movement, creativity, and imagination.
